Weighing just 38 grams including the strap, the RM 50-03 Tourbillon Split Seconds Chronograph Ultralight McLaren F1 is the lightest split-seconds tourbillon chronograph in the world. This achievement is due to the use of highly technical materials: Titanium and TPT™ carbon fibre not only enable an extremely open design, but also introduce a completely new material for the case, Graph TPT™.

Graph TPT™ case - Based on research from the National Graphene Institute at the University of Manchester, our engineers worked with North Thin Ply Technology to outline practical applications on paper and investigate how graphene could be incorporated into TPT™ carbon. The layers have a maximum thickness of 30 microns and are impregnated with a graphene-containing supercharged resin. They are then compiled by a CNC machine, which shifts the orientation of the fibers by 45° between layers.

The new split-seconds system - the study of the working of the split-second clip and the six column wheels of the individual rockers of the control mechanism has perfected its simultaneous movement - essential for absolute accuracy -, functional Lock and stability of its settings over time.

Titanium and carbon fiber TPT™ ultralight tourbillon movement
The RM50-03 movement weighs only 7 grams. This record weight was achieved by using high-tech materials and skeletonizing its components as much as possible.
Grade 5 titanium baseplates and bridges are highly corrosion resistant and very robust, allowing the gear train to operate with ease. This alloy (90% titanium, 6% aluminium and 4% vanadium) enhances the latter's mechanical properties.
Part of the bridges of the split-seconds chronograph are made of carbon fiber TPT™, and the transverse brackets together with the barrel and tourbillon bridges support the entire movement. Attached to the case strap, this bracket avoids the need for a case ring, allowing the movement to be perfectly integrated into the case.

New minutes and seconds system
The RM50-03 movement introduces the latest generation of split-seconds mechanism developed by Richard Mille engineers. The new column wheel operates the different levers of the split-seconds function, optimizing the operation of the chronograph. While previous Richard Mille chronographs have traditionally featured 8-column wheels, the wheel equipped with the RM 50-03 now has only 6-columns to ensure optimised synchronised movements, maximum functional locking and greater adjustment durability. In-depth research into gripper functionality has also led to new gripper designs. The coil springs have also been replaced by vanes on the RM 50-03's chasing seconds wheel, a technical decision that reduces torque variations when the chasing seconds function is activated.
All these developments have significantly improved the timekeeping performance of this tourbillon movement and halved the energy consumption of the chronograph, while reducing friction on the arbor.

This type of balance ensures greater reliability in the event of impacts and during assembly and disassembly of the movement. The long-term accuracy of the watch is thus improved. The central involute profile of these teeth applies pressure at an optimal angle of 20°, which increases the efficiency of the gear train and compensates for any potential penetration variation. This results in excellent torque transfer and significantly improved performance.

The bezel and caseback feature Graph TPT™, a carbon TPT™ whose physical properties have been dramatically improved by infusing graphene, a revolutionary nanomaterial that is 6 times lighter than steel yet durable 200 times more sexual.
Thanks to a collaboration between the University of Manchester, McLaren Applied Technologies and North Thin Ply Technology (NTPT®), Richard Mille has successfully produced a case machined from modified carbon TPT™. Extensive control and verification testing by McLaren Applied Technologies made it possible to develop a solution resulting in Graph TPT™, a material exclusively used by Richard Mille in watchmaking.
With its unique wavy patterned structure, Carbon TPT™ consists of 600 layers of parallel filaments obtained by separating carbon fibers. These layers, each with a maximum thickness of 30 microns, are impregnated with a graphene-containing resin. They are then assembled using a specific machine that stacks the layers by changing the orientation of the fibers by 45° between the two layers. The composite is then hardened in a kiln heated to 120°C at a pressure of 6 bar.
In the Richard Mille manufacturing facility dedicated to machining movement parts and cases, tasked with machining Graph TPT™, a great deal of time is spent developing programs and producing suitable cutting tools to provide machining accuracy down to the nearest micron.
